Due to an ACL tear in his left knee, forward Saddiq Bey will be out for the remainder of the Atlanta Hawks’ difficult 2023–24 NBA season, adding to the team’s already dire injury situation.
The Hawks’ chances of making the playoffs are further diminished by the absence of essential players Trae Young and Jalen Johnson in addition to backup center Onyeka Okongwu.
“We’ve been consistently dropping guys,” stated Dejounte Murray, a star player for the Hawks. It’s difficult. I believe that for many teams, injuries ultimately determine how their season unfolds.
Bey’s injury, which happened during a 116-103 loss to New Orleans, was first thought to be a hyperextended knee. Nevertheless, additional testing indicated how severe the damage was, which prompted the choice to have surgery.
Bey was visibly distressed throughout the confrontation on the court and eventually left with help. His 63-game average of 13.7 points and 6.5 rebounds this season will be missed as the Hawks try to stay in the running for the playoffs.
After beginning his NBA career with the Detroit Pistons, Bey joined the Hawks in the previous season and has been an essential member of their starting lineup ever since.
The Hawks had difficulties navigating the remainder of the season with a diminished roster after the losses of Young and Johnson have caused strain on the squad. Okongwu’s injury to his toe further exacerbates the situation.
Murray thought, “That’s been the thing for us all year.” “All we’ve been doing is trying to stay healthy and see what we can do when everyone is well.”
Bey is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason; given his condition, this will undoubtedly be difficult. Teams will have to assess his recuperation schedule and decide how much to offer him in a contract.
