Russell Wilson, a seasoned quarterback, will be released by the Denver Broncos this week, with an effective date following the commencement of the new league season. Wilson was still granted permission by the team to contact with teams this week in order to negotiate a deal.
Wilson’s availability is anticipated to make it more difficult for the Chicago Bears to deal Justin Fields.
Wilson could sign for the league minimum wage with any team, as the Broncos are guaranteed a record amount of dead-cap money. That may be the cause of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ recent rise to prominence as a possible front-runner to sign Wilson.
One of the teams that has been widely speculated to be interested in trade for Fields would be eliminated if Wilson signs with the Steelers. The Steelers and the Atlanta Falcons were thought to be the leading contenders for Fields, as the Bears attempt to move him before the new league season begins next week.
It is the Falcons’ intention to give Kirk Cousins first priority. This week’s reports have indicated that Cousins might be considering a transfer to Atlanta, but there have been rumors that this is just the most recent negotiation strategy he’s using to try to win a new contract with the Minnesota Vikings.
There are fewer teams vying for Justin Fields than the Chicago Bears.
Fields’ presence on the Bears roster by the formal opening of the new league year on Wednesday seems increasingly likely. Before a team turns to Fields as a possible solution to their quarterback problem, the Bears might need some time to let the dust settle on the initial round of quarterback signings.
It should be mentioned that the Bears would probably still select Caleb Williams with the first overall pick even if they were unable to trade for Fields. The NFL’s disinterest in Fields as a starting quarterback won’t change the team’s plans if they have determined that Williams is their best option going ahead at quarterback.
