The Falcons are getting ready for a season that will see higher expectations than any since 2017. It is draft season.

Raheem Morris doesn’t have the same luxury as his predecessor now that Kirk Cousins is a member of the team. Although Arthur Smith didn’t have high standards, he managed to fall short of them and was fired as a result. Morris, though, has lofty goals in mind. Acquiring a quarterback such as Cousins has pros and cons.

Yes, it’s a huge improvement over the team’s previous quarterback play, but anything less than a trip to the postseason would be a huge letdown, and Morris’ job security would be called into question right away.

The Falcons need to bolster their talented roster—particularly on the defensive end of the ball—in order to ensure that it reaches its maximum potential. Atlanta has significant needs at edge and cornerback, but most mock drafts, including the most recent one from CBS Sports, project the Falcons selecting Jared Verse, a “do-it-all defensive player,” to fill one of those spots.

Bryant McFadden is the class’s best edge rusher for the following reason: “He’s a defensive player that can play a variety of positions.” Although we are aware of his ability to pressure quarterbacks and rush the passer, he also possesses a strong run defense, which is extremely important in the National Football League.

Every mock drafter and media outlet in the world believes that the Falcons will select Dallas Turner, Jared Verse, or another defender in the first round. This would be the first time in Terry Fontenot’s tenure that a non-offensive player has been selected in the first round.

Although I doubt the Falcons will pass on the best defender, they do have a need. Taking the best player available, even if it means supporting a position of strength, has been Fontenot’s consistent strategy.

Though Fontenot won’t select one of them unless they are the top prospect on the big board, I don’t think it necessarily eliminates them from the running for Verse, Turner, or another defensive prospect. The choice shouldn’t be motivated by necessity.
