The Miami Dolphins have addressed a significant need in their offense with the signing of tight end Jonnu Smith. Smith, who played his college career at Florida International University, has signed a reported two-year deal with the Dolphins, filling a void left by the departure of Durham Smythe and Julian Hill.
Smith’s release from the Atlanta Falcons came as a result of a change in offensive philosophy under new head coach Raheem Morris and offensive coordinator Zac Robinson. The Falcons’ new scheme is expected to de-emphasize the tight end position, with former first-round pick Kyle Pitts taking on a more prominent role.
Despite his release, Smith’s productivity in Atlanta last season was evident, setting career highs in receptions (50) and receiving yards (582). His ability to gain yards after the catch ranked him among the top tight ends in the league, showcasing his value as a pass-catching threat.
For the Dolphins, who led the NFL in total yards and passing yards last season, the lack of production from the tight end position was notable. In fact, the team did not record a single touchdown from a tight end in the previous season.
Comparing the Dolphins’ tight end production to that of playoff teams reveals a significant disparity. While the Dolphins’ tight ends combined for 41 catches for 414 yards, playoff teams consistently received more substantial contributions from the position, with top tight ends recording over 700 receiving yards and multiple touchdowns.
With the addition of Smith, the Dolphins hope to address their deficiencies at the tight end position and provide quarterback Tyreek Hill with another reliable target in the passing game. Smith’s ability to stretch the field and contribute in various aspects of the offense makes him a valuable asset, and the Dolphins must prioritize maximizing his potential to elevate their offensive performance in the upcoming season.
