Hawkins, 26, started as a full-time safety for the Falcons during the 2022 season but was later demoted after the arrival of Jessie Bates. He recorded four interceptions and forced a fumble while totaling 84 tackles in 2022. Pro Football Focus ranked Hawkins just outside the top 60 safeties that season.

With the Patriots transitioning to new leadership under Jerod Mayo and defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington, they decided to move on from Adrian Phillips. They have also retained Kyle Dugger by using the transition tag, while Jabrill Peppers remains under contract until the end of the 2024 season on a two-year, $9 million deal.
