My series of free agency wish lists for the Falcons continues with this. Use the links below to access past editions if you missed any of them.
Calvin Robinson
The top three wide receivers who were eligible to sign free agents have already signed deals. While Tee Higgins and Michael Pittman Jr. were both franchise-tagged, Mike Evans re-signed with the Bucs, in whom the Falcons were reportedly interested.
Calvin Ridley, an old buddy, is now possibly the best wide receiver available as a free agency. He has the biggest upside of all the guys on this list, at the absolute least. Prior to his gambling suspension, Ridley was Atlanta’s #1 wide receiver. Despite spending almost two years away from the game, he still caught for over 1,000 yards this season with the Jaguars, even if there seemed to be some rust.
Ridley would also be a good addition to Drake London’s repertoire. After everything that happened, the Falcons might not be interested in having him return, but everything seemed to be going well in Atlanta. Wouldn’t it be amusing if the Falcons traded Ridley for a few choices and then signed him again in free agency a few years later? I think that’s fairly good business.
Davis, Gabe
The Falcons offence would have a much-needed vertical passing threat with the addition of Davis. He caught 27 touchdown passes in his four seasons with the Bills, averaging 16.7 yards per reception. At the absolute least, Davis can assist the Falcons in stretching the field. Davis will turn 25 years old the following season, so there’s still some chance that he can work on some of his other weaknesses.
Mooney Darnell
Mooney is a possible dark horse in this class of free agents for wide receivers. With 81 receptions for over 1,000 yards in 2021, he appeared to have the makings of a future top option. But during the last two seasons, he has struggled with injuries and hasn’t profited from Justin Fields’ play, who hasn’t grown into the kind of thrower the Bears had thought he would be. Mooney might be a valuable addition to the Falcons with improved quarterback play in the appropriate offence.
Brown Marquise
Brown can outpace defences more than anyone because of his quickness and small build. Throughout his five years in the league, he has amassed 3,644 yards and 28 touchdowns over 313 receptions, which is more than respectable, and there are reasons to think that his greatest football may still be ahead of him. Whether it was injuries to Kyler Murray or himself, Brown had a lot going on in Arizona. Over the course of the season, it will be intriguing to observe what type of stats he may put up in a stronger offence.
Odell Beckham Jr.
His relationships to Raheem Morris and Zac Robinson, under whom he played in Los Angeles, are the reasons I brought him up this week. However, Beckham is a stealthy excellent option for the Falcons’ wide receiver group and is probably not going to break the bank. The Falcons need more than one pass-catcher; I’m not sure he’s a #2 choice anymore.
Boyd Tyler
Because he plays with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, maybe the best pass-catching tandem in the league, Boyd has gone unnoticed in Cincinnati. I don’t think the Bengals will pay him what he deserves, and in an offence that uses him more frequently, his output might rise significantly.
