Breaking News: Braves drench White Sox in the Rainy opener

White Sox Drenched by Braves in Rain-Shortened Series Opener

After eight innings of rain-shortened series play against the Atlanta Braves on Monday, the Chicago White Sox were defeated 9-0. After a brief rain delay, the teams resumed play, and Chicago’s situation deteriorated even further. Charlie Morton, the starter for Atlanta, shut down the White Sox offense while the Braves lineup demonstrated why they are among the best in the league.

The White Sox, who have been shut out twice in four games by opponents, were blanked by the Braves. Two of the White Sox’s three hits came from Yoan Moncada, both off of Morton. After loading the bases with two outs in the first inning, the South Siders mounted a threat, but Paul DeJong struck out to end the inning.

Incompetent Crime
The Braves starter retired the next 11 batters he faced after Moncada doubled to start the third inning, but he left the game with two outs in the sixth.

It wasn’t until Moncada walked with two outs in the eighth inning of the game that the White Sox managed to score again.

It was Chris Flexen’s first time toeing the rubber in a White Sox uniform. In his 2024 debut, the right-hander, who was signed in the offseason, only went 4.1 innings. Just like in the Cactus League, he had trouble maintaining control. The Braves offense teed off on Flexen after he retired the first seven batters he faced.

Among the Greatest

On Flexen, Atlanta scored four goals, capping his team debut. He gave up six hits, walked three, and fanned one.

“That team over there is quite good. About the defeat, Pedro Grifol, manager of the White Sox, stated, “Everyone knows it.” “When you don’t pitch in leverage counts against those guys, that tends to really play in their favor.”

The Braves led 3-0 after Orlando Arcia doubled in two runs in the fourth inning. After the rain delay, Austin Riley scored four runs, including a three-run home run off Dominic Leone, to make the score 9 to 0.

Notes and News

Eloy Jimenez is day-to-day for the White Sox as he continues to be assessed for a left adductor injury. Meanwhile, they intend to play a man short.

The White Sox announced during the blowout defeat that they had reached an agreement to a one-year reunion with Mike Clevinger. After the previous season, the right-hander chose to forego his mutual option year with Chicago.

After Bryan Shaw was relieved, Jordan Leasure pitched the seventh and got the Braves out in order. Leasure’s scoreless inning turned out to be the Sox bullpen’s only one of the day.

What’s Coming Up Next?

The White Sox and Braves will play the second game of their three-game series on Tuesday, weather permitting. Former White Sox pitcher Reynaldo Lopez, who signed with Atlanta in the offseason, will face Garrett Crochet on the mound.

Crochet will aim to improve on his strong Opening Day performance and lead the White Sox to victory in 2024. The game airs on NBC Sports Chicago+, and the first pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM CT.
