According to Alan Hutton, Mario Hermoso, a star from Athletico Madrid, “ticks another box” for Aston Villa manager Unai Emery during the summer transfer window.
According to Sport Mediaset on March 24, the Athletico Madrid defender, whose Spanish contract is about to expire at the end of the current campaign, has reportedly received an offer from Villa that would allow him to join Unai Emery’s team at Villa Park through 2028.
On March 27, Fabrizio Romano stated that, contrary to rumours, neither Juventus nor Barcelona are interested in signing the Spanish centre back, and he has not reached an agreement on a new contract with Diego Simeone’s team.
Hutton has acknowledged that Hermoso possesses the necessary skills to fit into Villa’s defence, especially in the Champions League, but he has urged Emery and his hiring team to consider other options in addition to free agents.
Hutton told Villa News, “I don’t think you have to look there all the time.”

Hermoso, as Hutton indicated, has demonstrated during his tenure at Athletico Madrid that, under Simeone, he is more than capable of playing in a backline and providing strong defence. This is the case both in La Liga and the Champions League.

While Tyrone Mings is still recovering from an injury and Clement Lenglet’s future is uncertain, he may not be the ideal fit at Villa Park, but having more defensive cover could be very helpful.
Nothing is official yet, but this could be a deal to closely monitor in the upcoming weeks and months, especially since it doesn’t seem likely that Hermoso will agree to new terms in Madrid just yet.
