Sunderland should have an eye on league rival as possible Will Still alternative
Sunderland are heading towards another managerial change at the end of this season.
But it seems like the club will appoint a new, permanent boss in the summer, and Will Still is being linked with Sunderland once again.
The 31-year-old Reims boss continues to impress in Ligue 1, after being linked with the Stadium of Light vacancy after Tony Mowbray’s exit in December.
Will Still is the man Sunderland want
Speaking exclusively to Sunderland AFC News yesterday, Graeme Bailey revealed that Still is the man that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus wants to hire in the summer.
Still is the ‘ideal’ candidate for the Black Cats opening but he’ll come at a cost, with previous reports suggesting that Still could cost upwards of £4million in compensation.
So expect the Sunderland owners to keep their options open, and one potentially cheaper alternative, but still a very good coach and maybe a good fit for Sunderland, is Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl.
Why Danny Rohl could be perfect Will Still alternative
Rohl took charge of Sheffield Wednesday in October, becoming the youngest coach in the English Football League at 34.
Sheffield Wednesday had just three points on the board when he arrived, and zero hope of Championship survival.
Fast-forward to now and the Owls have picked up some huge wins to now find themselves on 29 points and just four points adrift ahead of the final run-in.
Rohl has completely transformed the club’s fortunes and also the way they play. The Owls are now a really dominant team who can pass the ball around nicely and attack effectively too; in the second half of their 2-0 defeat away at league leaders Leicester City earlier in the month, Wednesday had 39% possession and out-shot Leicester by 10 to the Foxes’ 4 (SofaScore).
Rohl, described as a ‘top manager’ by Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan, has made a good habit of getting the best out of what is, in reality, a very average team. And with the Owls facing the drop this season, it seems likely that Rohl may have done enough to come into conversation for some Championship jobs in the summer.
How much Rohl might Sunderland cost remains to be seen. But he’s a manager who plays good, attacking footballing, and his CV speaks for itself; he’s been a coach with Southampton, Bayern Munich, and the German national team in the past.
The question though may be whether he’s good enough at developing young talent.
He’s not really worked in that field before and he’s not had enough transfer windows to really showcase that ability at Sheffield Wednesday, so that could be a potential deterrent for the Black Cats’ hierarchy.
