Lions bring back K Michael Badgley on one-year deal

The Detroit Lions made a move to retain kicker Michael Badgley, signing him to a one-season deal, according to his agent Brian McLaughlin. Badgley’s contract terms were not disclosed. The agreement comes ahead of Badgley’s impending unrestricted free agency next month.

Badgley played a significant role for the Lions during the latter part of the 2023 season, handling kicking duties in the final four regular-season games and throughout the playoffs. In the regular season, he had a strong performance, going 13 of 15 on extra points and successfully converting all four field goals he attempted. His postseason performance was also notable, making all 11 extra points and three field goals across three playoff games.

However, in the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers, Badgley saw limited opportunities for field-goal attempts as the Lions opted to go for it on fourth down twice, a decision that contributed to their eventual 34-31 loss.

Prior to his stint with the Lions, Badgley had a varied career, playing for multiple teams over six NFL seasons. He previously played for the Los Angeles Chargers (2018-2020), Indianapolis Colts (2021), Tennessee Titans (2021), and Chicago Bears (2022). In total, he has amassed 462 points in 64 career games, with a field goal success rate of 82.4% (98 of 119) and an extra point success rate of 96% (168 of 175).
