In recent months, the former Everton and Manchester United forward has considered taking part in a celebrity boxing match.
During an appearance on Overlap’s Stick To Football podcast, Wayne Rooney addressed rumors of a celebrity boxing fight.
Rooney, who was recently dismissed as manager at Birmingham City, appeared on the popular YouTube show to discuss his playing and managerial careers, as well as high and low points. However, Gary Neville and company were eager to know if he would step into the boxing ring soon.
Eddie Hearn, the head of Matchroom Boxing, said on the Overlap show that Rooney had previously messaged him about a potential fight, stating, “I’ve actually spoken to Wayne a few times about the Jake Paul fight.” Normally, after a couple of glasses of red [wine], he’ll send me a message at night saying, “Listen, I want to fight that geezer.” Wayne has had some amateur fights, but his upcoming fight against Jake Paul at Old Trafford is a viable option.
The Mirror reported last week that Rooney was in talks for a fight with KSI, which bolstered Hearn’s assertions. The former Manchester United forward has now responded to the speculation. Neville asked, “Are you going to be a boxer? “Are you going to fight?” Rooney smiled and said, “You never know! No, they got in touch and posed a question. But right now, I think I want to focus on going back into management rather than fighting. They’ve communicated, and the Misfits have made headlines. My primary goal is to return to management. My biggest goal is to get back into football.
Rooney was let go by Birmingham City after only 15 games and is now looking for other opportunities. He is still only 38 years old, but he has managed three clubs (Derby County, DC United, and Birmingham) and has voiced a desire to return to management as soon as possible.
