These two terms should be included in whatever 2024 catchphrase the White Sox might come up with. Actually, since the beginning of Spring Training, manager Pedro Grifol has spoken this phrase a hundred times. If I had a dollar for each of those instances, I would have around ten dollars extra.
But precisely what does that mean? When the question was posed on Monday prior to the White Sox’s first full-squad exercise, there were varying interpretations.
First baseman Andrew Vaughn stated, “Keep the other team on its toes.” Play with intensity, solid defense, quality pitching, hitting, and running. Winning baseball games can be achieved by applying pressure to the opposition.
Eloy Jiménez, a White Sox designated hitter, stated, “Respect the ninety-nines,” a reference to the distance between the bases. We were informed that this morning by [Grifol]. That’s excellent. That is a distinct statement coming from him in his sophomore year.
Jiménez claims the squad as a whole, not simply Grifol, is the reason for the difference.
Regarding the unmemorable 2023 campaign, Jiménez remarked, “We put in the effort sometimes, some games.” However, things will be different this year.
Thus, playing quickly has less to do with expecting every player in the lineup to steal bases and more to do with the team’s mentality and current status. Without a doubt, basestealing will rise for those who succeed at it, like Luis Robert Jr., Andrew Benintendi, and Nicky Lopez, to mention a few.
For athletes endowed with multiple talents but lacking quick reflexes, it all comes down to the team’s identity and culture. To elucidate this concept, Grifol related anecdotes from his recent encounters with the catchers, notably Martín Maldonado.
“Our game is fast-paced, and I understand what you’re talking about, Maldy, since you’re probably staring at me with a questioning expression on your face. With that, there’s nothing I can do,” grifol remarked. However, there are many items inside that term that fall into categories that we consider to be quite significant.
We continuously learn from one other in this joyful yet combative, brave, and unselfish environment. It’s not only quick; it’s a little more intricate. The word appeals to me because it conveys the idea that we must use all necessary effort to win baseball games. Whether it’s balls in the ground, hit and run, run and hit, or bunt. Everything like that. If we want to succeed, we must search for all of that information.
The idea of “culture” has also been mocked by others, despite Grifol, general manager Chris Getz, and other employees regularly discussing it. However, it’s a crucial component of the White Sox’s strategy.
Consider this season as the startup phase of a business that will someday become well-known among the Fortune 500. The company’s story won’t likely end in complete success in 2024, and some of the early adopters won’t be around when it aims to grow to its maximum capacity in two or three years. However, even those who are unable to attend will be able to look back and realize that they had a big impact on the growth of the club.
We are not going to invent something here for the first time. We’re attempting to construct something like this, said Grifol. Some of this stuff is in several of these organizations. Perhaps they should reword it. But these kinds of things are what truly excellent organizations focus on.
“They’re about having fun on the field, taking chances, acting selflessly, being excellent teammates, and knowing what it takes for a team to win baseball games.” Since we are all involved in this collectively, all of our accomplishments are connected.
We’ll have a lot of great individual years if, at the end of the year, we’re where we need to be, where we should be, and where we want to be. That is beyond your capabilities. You have a roster of forty because you need your teammates. To finish this, it will probably take forty minutes, maybe longer.
