Nine recoveries and 100% ground duels later, the Gers had landed a Diomande in an all-action exhibition.

Rangers midfielder posts destroyer numbers in all action display

Mohamed Diomande is a player who emerged from nowhere in January before signing for Rangers with the midfielder making an instant impact. The 22-year old has mainly been played as a number ten, however, against St Johnstone, we saw why a slightly deeper role is his preferred position as Gers boss Philippe Clement paired him with John Lundstram.

The manager has a much stronger squad to call on now but it was still a surprise to see Mohamed Diomande in Rangers starting XI given the conditions and opposition – his statistics proving that there was no need to be worried.

Mohamed Diomande makes Rangers impression

On a pitch where every player struggled to stay upright and shins were being used to control and play passes, the fact that the Ivorian managed to make such an impression is hugely exciting.

If he can produce this sort of quality here, imagine how good he will be on a proper playing surface.

Playing the full 90 minutes, Mohamed Diomande showed that he is more than just neat and tidy winning three out of four tackles, six out of six ground duels and made nine ball recoveries.

Add this to the two chances created and his crucial opening goal and we have a proper number eight on our hands.

It was a position that we didn’t seem to need any more depth but the £4.3m option to buy loanee is proving that we did.

He is looking like the player we thought, hoped and expected Jose Cifuentes to be when Michael Beale hyped him up before his arrival.

That Diomande and Oscar Cortes have both hit the ground running will only help Clement’s title bid.

Not only do they provide depth, but they also upgrade on the players who had been starting.

For once, it looks like we have got the January transfer window right.
