The Dallas Mavericks are sitting at 25-21 after Saturday night’s loss to the Sacramento Kings, and something has to change within this team.
Dallas continues to lose leads, and the supporting cast around Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving must improve. It doesn’t help that they have had a new injury almost weekly as of late, but a trade seems like it is on the horizon for this team.
The Mavs can’t contend with the roster they have right now, and they must find a way to upgrade their defense and gain some size.

Dallas’ main focus seems to be upgrading at the power forward or small forward position, and adding a defensive ace at these positions would help this team tremendously.
Here are five moves that would boost the Mavs and five that they must avoid.
10. Boost: Adding a backup point guard who can create for others and defend
Adding a backup point guard isn’t as pressing a need as some of the other needs the Mavs have, but it is something that would help this team. Without Doncic or Irving on the floor, they don’t have another point guard who can operate in the pick and roll and be a threat as both a passer and a scorer.
Their group of bench guards are mostly all score-first players, and adding someone who can lead the offense would be a major plus. Finding a guard who can defend while also creating for his teammates would likely be a challenge, and it seems unlikely that the Mavs prioritize this at the deadline.
Dante Exum has proven to be excellent off the bench as well a starter, and has flashed some ability as a playmaker, but the Mavs’ offense doesn’t have much of a direction when Irving and Doncic are on the bench.
The Mavs have many more pressing needs than this, but getting a facilitator as a throw-in in a trade would be something that can help Dallas’ bench unit.
