Breaking News: Former Padres First-Round Pick Signs One-Year Deal With World Series Champs

Travis Jankowski, once one of the gems in San Diego’s farm system, is going back to a team where he had some genuine success.

Jankowski has reportedly agreed to a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers. According to reporter Buster Olney, who verified the agreement, Jankowski will get at least $1.7 million. Based on performance bonuses, those figures can go up.

Last year, as a free agent, Jankowski made his debut with the Rangers. He primarily played as a reserve outfielder and blended in with the team’s culture quite well.

The 32-year-old had a good batting average of.263 at the end of the season. Despite hitting just one home run in the regular season, he led Texas in stolen bases with 19.

The Rangers obviously value having a reserve player with such a remarkable unique quality. Gaining another contract was undoubtedly aided by Jankowski’s post-season hitting of.333 with a.844 OPS.

Before joining the Rangers to win a World Series last season, Jankowski had an unusual journey.

No. 44 Overall in the 2012 MLB Draft, he was selected by San Diego. After leading small Stony Brook to the College World Series, this happened. Before the second round started, the Padres gleefully grabbed up this prolific contact hitter.

Jankowski debuted with the Padres in 2015 following three seasons of arduous work in the minor levels.

With wildly uneven hitting ability, Jankowski played every outfield position. Jankowski never hit more than four home runs in a season during his five seasons with the Padres. Although he didn’t spend enough time on base to fully utilize his ability to steal bases, he was a frequent merchant.

Jankowski was traded between several teams (Cincinnati, Philadelphia, New York Mets, Seattle) in 2020–22 before settling between with the Rangers.
