Manchester United already know their biggest transfer priority in the summer will revolve around a new striker.

With Anthony Martial’s contract at Old Trafford due to expire, Rasmus Hojlund will be the sole surviving centre forward come the end of the season and this leaves the Reds with a big hole which needs to be filled. The trouble United have is whether or not they have the pulling power to attract the top names.

Erik ten Hag backs Marcus Rashford to rediscover form

The 27-year-old looks like he has not lost a step and it will be interesting to see if he can translate those performances to the Premier League. Should he manage to do this between now and the end of the season, Erik ten Hag cannot afford to ignore the message the English forward sent this week in an interview with Sky Sports.

When asked about his future, Toney replied: “You can never predict when is the right time to move elsewhere, but I think it’s obvious I want to play for a top club.

“Everybody wants to play for a top club, that is fighting for titles. Whether it’s this January that is the right time for a club to come in and pay the right money, who knows?

“But my main focus is to do what I do on the pitch, and let the background work take care of itself.”

Toney is clearly open to a move and with United in need of a forward, they should need no further encouragement to pursue him. In his first full season in the Premier League, Toney managed double figures for his newly promoted club.

Evan Ferguson, Ivan Toney, Kylian Mbappe and the uncomfortable Manchester United transfer question
Why Manchester United signing Karim Benzema would not repeat Cristiano Ronaldo transfer mistake

In the next campaign, he managed to grab 20 goals and is clearly highlighting himself as a threat. His comments should be like a red rag to a bull for United’s boss.

Signing a forward who has experience in the Premier League can be expensive business but Toney has shown he would be value for money even if his current club demand a big fee. Should Brentford drop to the Championship, which is a real possibility despite Toney’s return, suddenly his price tag will drop significantly

United need to be all over this deal in the summer, if they can.
