The center-back, linked to Rangers, is prepared to leave the English powerhouses in January.

Charlie Cresswell is now ready to quit Leeds United in the January transfer window amid links with a potential move to Rangers, according to the Sunday Mirror.

The newspaper reported in its print edition (31 December, page 72) that the centre-back is open to departing Elland Road either on loan or permanently in the new year, having not been particularly involved in Daniel Farke’s side this season.

Several Championship clubs including Michael Beale’s Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Southampton have been linked with the 21-year-old while Rangers have also been named as potential suitors as Cresswell considers his future.

However, the latest team to show interest in the England youth international and Under-21 European Championship winner are Championship high-flyers Ipswich Town.

Get him in

Rangers are not blessed with quality at centre-back currently and that was displayed in the Light Blues’ Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic. Both Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun struggled at Celtic Park and were unable to keep the Hoops’ attacking talent quiet.

Partner that with the poor recent form of both Ben Davies and John Souttar when called upon by Philippe Clement and it seems clear that the Belgian needs to bring at least one new defensive option to January when the transfer window opens.

Rangers

Cresswell may be young, but he has shown in his cameos for Leeds, his time with Millwall on loan and his international career that he is a more than capable centre-back. If he made the switch to Ibrox he would massively improve the Gers’ hopes of lifting the Scottish Premiership this season.

Rangers should hopefully be able to pip the likes of Sunderland and Ipswich in the Championship to the 21-year-old’s signature as well. They are not only financially stronger but the opportunity to play in the Europa League is an attractive prospect.

Hopefully, these links have some genuine legs as whether it be a permanent switch or on loan, this would be an excellent move for the Gers.
