Celtic burst the Philippe Clement bubble

Rangers had gone 16 games unbeaten heading into today’s match at Celtic Park and while Philippe Clement may not have regarded it as their biggest test of the season so far, it turned out that way.

Celtic have burst that honeymoon period, make no mistake, and now we’ll really see what direction they take in the aftermath.

There’s little doubt that the Bhoys weren’t even at their best today – it was a difficult 90 minutes and the home side were slack in spells, which invited pressure.

Even then, the Ibrox side couldn’t find a way to victory in this fixture when it really mattered. Celtic, meanwhile, showed determination to get the game won even through trying moments. That continues to be the difference between these two squads, regardless of who the managers are.

Title ramifications

No silverware has been won today, let’s make that clear. There is a long, long way to go in what will likely be a frantic and tense title race. But you can’t ignore the fact that Celtic have taken a strong step forward on that front today.

Celtic are now eight points ahead of the second-placed side and, even if Rangers win both of their games in hands, they are now waiting on another Bhoys slip-up to fight their way back to the top of the table.

It was unthinkable that Rangers would come to Celtic Park today, win and then have the chance to move four points clear. Brendan Rodgers and the team haven’t let that happen and can now move into 2024 with confidence.
