The Detroit Lions’ roster has undergone numerous changes in less than a day, forcing them to face yet another round of difficult choices.
The organization announced on Friday afternoon that offensive tackle Michael Schofield had joined the practice squad and kicker Michael Badgley had been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. The Lions also announced the release of defensive tackle Chris Smith from the practice squad and the waiver of fullback Jason Cabinda in addition to the signing.
One day after Cabinda was cut by the Lions and placed on the injured reserve (IR), the decision was made to waive him. With him out of the picture, the Lions have one roster slot available before they play the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday in Arlington. This week’s announced absences from action are C.J. Gardner-Johnson and James Houston, who have both returned to practice following their separate injuries.
This makes it possible for veteran linebacker Bruce Irvin of the Lions to be promoted from the practice squad. Irvin has only played in one game since joining the Lions on November 13—a Week 13 victory against the New Orleans Saints—during which he recorded a sack.
This season, the Lions have had difficulty stopping some of the top quarterbacks in the league, particularly those who create plays outside of the pocket. This season, the Cowboys have gone 7-0 at AT&T Stadium thanks to the dominance of Dallas’ Dak Prescott when playing at home. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Irvin suit up this weekend, as Detroit struggles to put pressure on quarterbacks.
