Indianapolis, IN — May 12, 2025
In a devastating blow to the Indiana Fever and the WNBA at large, rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has been ruled out for the entire 2025 season after suffering a torn ACL during a team practice session on Sunday afternoon.
The injury occurred during a routine scrimmage at the Fever’s training facility in Indianapolis. Witnesses report that Clark landed awkwardly after a contested layup, immediately clutching her left knee and collapsing to the floor. Medical staff rushed to her aid, and she was subsequently transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
An MRI conducted later that evening confirmed a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee. Surgery is scheduled for later this week, followed by an extensive rehabilitation process expected to sideline her for 9 to 12 months.
“This is an incredibly tough day for Caitlin, our team, and our fans,” said Fever head coach Stephanie White. “Caitlin has been a transformative presence on and off the court. While this setback is significant, we know her resilience and determination will guide her through recovery.”
Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, had quickly become the face of the franchise. In her brief preseason appearances, she showcased the dynamic playmaking and scoring ability that made her a collegiate standout at the University of Iowa. Her absence leaves a significant void in the Fever’s lineup and alters the team’s trajectory for the upcoming season.
The basketball community has rallied around Clark in the wake of the news. Messages of support have poured in from fellow athletes, coaches, and fans across the globe. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert issued a statement expressing the league’s support: “Caitlin’s talent and passion have already made a profound impact on our league. We stand with her and look forward to her return to the court.”
Clark took to social media to address her fans: “I’m heartbroken by this injury, but I’m committed to coming back stronger. Thank you for all the love and support—I’ll be cheering on my teammates every step of the way.”
The Indiana Fever will now look to veteran players and emerging talents to fill the gap left by Clark’s absence. The team’s resilience will be tested as they navigate the season without their star rookie.
