How many times has a Celtic manager gone into the dressing room, pinned up a boast, a jibe or a threat from a fanciful sand dancer in blue before declaring:
‘There it is Bhoys, there’s your motivation!’
Brendan Rodgers has now been presented with yet another opportunity to ram the words of an Ibrox newbie back down their throats, and his own words to his Bhoys who will hopefully widen the lead in the Scottish Premiership in Paradise on Saturday afternoon will be candid and demanding.
Wolves reject, Fabio Silva has entered the building with a mouthful of deception as he proclaims the ‘club’ with one Championship trophy in their 13-year existence as ‘The best team here.’ They obviously don’t do stats in Portugal or Wolverhampton where he was deemed not good enough to retain and they certainly don’t do them over in Govan.
The permed Portuguese added that theRangers were his ‘first option’ against a backdrop of unverified speculation that Celtic had ‘tracked him’ for some time and lost out. Yeah, right!
Now, I’m no expert but surely someone is telling porkies here. A cursory glance at Celtic’s record haul over a ten-year period will reveal the truth; Eight Premiership Championship Flags fluttering over the Holy Ground, Five Scottish Cups glistening in the east end Trophy cabinet and a Five Scottish League Cups which have rested in Paradise.
No, I’m certainly no expert, but I’m also not an idiot who believes that the Ibrox club are in any way, shape or form superior to a team with a bulging Trophy cabinet, one which of course includes the coveted European Cup!
Silva’s haul is a sprightly 16 goals in the last five years during his time at Porto, Wolves, Anderlecht and PSV! Contrast and compare to Larsson’s 40 goals in one historic season. I double-dare you!
So, I rest my case. I’m not suggesting the high-flying hit man (!) will not be a success in Scotland, I’m suggesting that until you learn to hit the back of the net on a regular basis (ala Jorge Cadete!) in a meaningful manner, shut your mouth and let your football do the talking.
PS, I do believe that Celtic fans prefer Gold medals to Silva.
