After suffering a depressing 3-0 loss to Coventry City the previous weekend, Beale’s team overcame it to defeat play-off rivals Hull City with a late goal from Jack Clarke.
After Hull City’s victory, Hume remarked, “You know, the weekend was tough on us; they probably had three chances in the game and scored three goals.” “We had numerous opportunities but failed to score. We discussed it after the game and concluded that we didn’t play well enough in both boxes. It is well deserved to leave today with three points, a goal, and a clean sheet.
“We had to think back on the game [Coventry] because we made some mistakes but also made some good plays that led to plenty of opportunities. We needed to be a little bit more organised and sit a little bit deeper today because Hull was a strong team and they play excellent football. I believe we did a good job of that.
“When they go home, they want to win the match. Not only must we win the game, but we are also getting closer. It was a basketball game at times, and at times it was tough. We deserved the three points because we were a well-organized team.”
Hull City was notably subdued by Sunderland, especially in the first half, as Beale’s team chose not to push the ball up the field.
We had to exercise patience to maintain possession and refrain from biting when they had the ball, Hume continued. “They were waiting for our front players to jump so they could pop it around us and then play forward and get our midfielders out of possession.” “We performed that effectively. That is the result of organization.
“We discussed the two stickers that were sitting on the midfield players, preventing them from receiving the ball, prior to the game. Although the first half was a little slow, they didn’t have many opportunities.
