Prog Legends Genesis Celebrate Early Years with ‘Best of 1967-1975’ Compilation
Progressive rock pioneers Genesis are set to honor their groundbreaking early years with the release of a new compilation album, Best of 1967-1975. The collection will highlight the band’s formative period, covering their evolution from an experimental, psychedelic group to one of the most influential progressive rock acts of all time.
The album will feature remastered versions of key tracks from the band’s first six studio albums, including From Genesis to Revelation (1969), Trespass (1970), Nursery Cryme (1971), Foxtrot (1972), Selling England by the Pound (1973), and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974). This era of Genesis is widely regarded as their most artistically ambitious, featuring complex compositions, elaborate storytelling, and theatrical performances led by then-frontman Peter Gabriel.
A Tribute to the Golden Era of Genesis
Genesis’ early years were defined by their willingness to push musical boundaries, blending intricate instrumentals with surreal and poetic lyrics. Songs like The Musical Box, Supper’s Ready, Firth of Fifth, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway remain fan favorites and have influenced countless prog-rock and art-rock musicians. The Best of 1967-1975 collection aims to introduce new listeners to this era while giving longtime fans a chance to revisit the band’s early masterpieces in enhanced audio quality.
The compilation will also include rare tracks such as Twilight Alehouse and Happy the Man, along with a selection of live performances that showcase Genesis’ theatrical stage presence. The deluxe edition will feature a booklet with archival photos, liner notes from band members, and insights into the making of each song.
Phil Collins and Steve Hackett Reflect on the Collection
While Peter Gabriel left the band in 1975, Genesis drummer-turned-frontman Phil Collins has expressed his admiration for this period of the band’s history. “The early Genesis albums were full of creativity and bold experimentation. It was a special time, and I think fans will appreciate hearing these songs in a fresh way,” Collins said in a statement.
Guitarist Steve Hackett, who played a key role in defining Genesis’ signature sound, added, “This collection reminds us of a time when progressive rock had no limits. It was about storytelling, musicianship, and taking risks. I’m thrilled that these songs are being celebrated once again.”
