In Saturday’s 2-0 victory over St. Mirren, Lawrence Shankland scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season. He hopes to continue his goal-scoring streak when they play at Easter Road.
The quantity of rumors surrounding the Hearts captain’s future has only increased as a result of his incredible play in recent weeks. Naturally, the 28-year-old would not discuss his future plans; instead, he is entirely focused on attempting to help his Jambos teammates score three more points.
“I’ve been there before, speculating is really just an indication that you’re doing well and carrying out your duties effectively,” he remarked. That’s how I see it; I don’t need to focus on much more than that because I’m having fun playing football, scoring goals, and everything is going well. I simply keep focusing on scoring goals and winning games, and the club will handle the rest.”
Jokingly, he said, “Have you got a crystal ball I can look at?” when asked if he thought he would still be at Tynecastle by the end of the January window. prior to moving forward… “My contract is for a year and a half, and I’m having fun playing football and getting goals. When you’re doing well, speculation follows, and I don’t see it as anything more than that now, nor will I until later.”
The Jambos followed up their convincing 2-0 victory over Celtic in Glasgow with another impressive showing against St Mirren at home. Shankland’s second goal was an act of pure class, but his first was a classic poacher’s finish.
“I just finished a very successful season in which I scored a lot of goals.” After the European games, I went through a little dry spell, but I always thought I’d be back scoring goals, so I’m happy to see them coming back. I have 15 in December, so thus far I’ve had good numbers.
“Obviously, the second game against St. Mirren was a good hit. The way I caught it told me straight away that it was flying in, and I had a good line behind it. The ball didn’t move much until it struck the upper corner. It was a nice finish, and it’s always nice to get them that way. It was my weaker side, but the way it happened was like a half volley, and I scored a really nice goal off the bounce.
“I think the first one (against St Mirren) shows that you just try to be in and around the goal. I just managed to get a bit of space on the second phase of a set play and managed to get my head on it.” Since I was so close to the goalie, it was really just a matter of getting it on target. To be honest, it was a little closer than I had hoped. The second goal was a good one, but when you’re playing well, all you can do is try to be in the vicinity of the goals and present when the ball drops.
“Generally, you just have to experience one dry spell before more appear to follow when you experience them. It seems like you’re constantly making the wrong runs at first, but then things start to turn around a little. Smelling them out makes you feel good and makes the task seem easier.”
