A rare appearance by a Serie A defender as Rangers reportedly get ready for their homecoming bid

Serie A defender makes rare appearance as Rangers brace for fresh homecoming bid

Josh Doig made his first league appearance in weeks for Verona – as Rangers reportedly brace themselves for January interest in Ridvan Yilmaz. The 21-year-old Serie A defender came off the bench in the second half of Verona’s 2-0 win over Cagliari, the left-back’s first appearance in five Italian top flight matches.

Versatile Italian youth international Filippo Terracciano, 20, has been the preferred option at the Serie A club as of late and the situation comes at an interesting time for Rangers.

The Ibrox side know that stalwart left-back Borna Barisic is out of contract at the end of the season whilst the situation with Ridvan Yilmaz is of continuing speculation.

Did Rangers miss Josh Doig chance?

Many Rangers fans feel that the club should’ve moved for Josh Doig when they signed Ridvan Yilmaz for Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas.

Then of Scottish Premiership rivals Hibs, Doig would’ve been an intriguing homegrown squad option and understudy to Barisic available for the £3m the Serie A side eventually paid for his services.

In the same summer, Rangers were securing a deal for highly-rated Turkish international Ridvan Yilmaz, paying an initial £3.4m rising to £5m for the left-back.

Since the switch Rangers haven’t got a suitable return on the 22-year-old, an initial adjustment to life in Scotland and then injuries devastating his first season at the club.

Excluded from the Rangers European squad amid pressure to meet the UEFA homegrown quota, many believe it proves the irony of the club’s failure to move for homegrown left-back Doig.

Ridvan Yilmaz linked with transfer out of Ibrox

Now playing under his third manager in Philippe Clement at Rangers, Ridvan Yilmaz has been unable to shift Borna Barisic on a consistent basis and now his future is the subject of much debate.

Reports in Turkey last week claim that Istanbul giants Galatasaray have contacted Yilmaz’s agents with a view to a January move.

It’s not the first time a highly-rated player has struggled with the expectation of Ibrox before returning to his homeland, Cedric Itten’s situation one of constant intrigue for Rangers fans.

With Ridvan Yilmaz failing to find consistency in Glasgow there is very much a feeling the expensive signing is one of several who could be moved on in January.

As Josh Doig makes a tentative return to the Verona first-team, perhaps Rangers could offer the inconsistent left-back a similar homecoming reprieve in Scotland.
