Tillman spent the previous season on loan at Ibrox; however, in order to allow him to join PSV, the club agreed to give up their option to purchase in exchange for a £1 million payment from Bayern Munich.
A 10% sell-on fee for Rangers was also part of that agreement, and PSV technical director Earnie Stewart says that the £14 million buyout option appears to be about to expire if Tillman decides to extend his loan.
Stewart stated: “It is true there is an option to sign both Malik Tillman and Sergino Dest, and there is an expectation we will do that with both of them,” as reported by the Daily Record [December 21]. Luckily, it appears that they both wish to remain in Eindhoven.
Of course, that is also quite significant. You can want anything as a club, but a player is crucial to this. You first talk to the player’s management about it. But Malik and Sergino’s life is going great.
In the big picture, £1.4 million might not seem like much, but adding it to the transfer budget for the January transfer window could be crucial for bringing in new players to strengthen Philippe Clement’s team.
The manager has made a lot of statements regarding the need to strengthen his group and bring in fresh players after Michael Beale’s summer transfer window left the team imbalanced, something the new manager is eager to rectify.
When Rangers get the extra transfer windfall from the Tillman deal, they may be able to pursue more players, which might increase their options and willingness to spend money.
Fingers crossed at Rangers that PSV can finalize their transfer agreement in the January window, as transfer fees that were previously just out of reach for those at the top at Ibrox may suddenly look more attainable.
