‘Excuse me…’ – Philippe Clement’s direct response to Ianis Hagi Rangers transfer recall question

Ianis Hagi’s potential return to Rangers in January has not been discussed by Philippe Clement, who has acknowledged that it is not solely his decision to see the forward return to Ibrox.

Currently on loan at La Liga team Deportivo Alaves, the Romanian playmaker has made 13 league appearances but has yet to score or provide an assist. Hagi is under contract for another two years, but his loan deal expires in the summer of 2024, so his future with the Gers appears to be in jeopardy.

After returning from a protracted injury layoff, the 25-year-old had expressed concerns about his lack of playing time in Scotland, and previous Light Blues manager Michael Beale approved his loan departure. This has raised questions about his future and whether Clement will want to give Hagi a chance to demonstrate that he can play a significant role in the Belgian government.

The possibility of a January recall option is still unknown, but when Clement was questioned about it in an interview with the Romanian publication Fanatik, he was hesitant to discuss it further and acknowledged that the club, not just him, makes the final decision.

Clement, keeping his cards close to his chest, acknowledged: “I only share certain things with the player and not with the media. I apologize, but I don’t usually discuss transfers, rumors, and other unrelated topics in public.

“I recognize your aptitude and interest, but we only talk about these specifics in the club. When it comes to my players, I dislike debating point disputes. Since the club has made this decision in addition to me, we shall see what transpires.”

Rangers have a wealth of players who can play as number ten in attacking midfield, including Todd Cantwell, Tom Lawrence, Sam Lammers, and Kieran Dowell. Some supporters hope to see Hagi return for the second half of the campaign because they think he’s a better choice.
