Derrick White Addresses Incident at Colorado Game as Celtics Prepare for New Season

Boston Celtics guard Derrick White has broken his silence regarding a physical altercation that occurred during the Colorado vs. Colorado State football game on September 14, 2024. White, a University of Colorado alum, was in attendance when tensions escalated, leading to an incident where his hat was knocked off during an argument. Reflecting on the situation, White expressed regret, stating that he “never thought [he’d] be in that situation” and admitted that he “shouldn’t have been there.” Despite the confrontation, White emphasized that he wasn’t physically harmed and is now ready to move forward.

During the Celtics media day, White elaborated on the altercation, explaining that while he was involved in an argument, the physical contact was limited to someone flipping his hat off. The situation, however, quickly escalated, and bystanders had to restrain White before law enforcement arrived. The star guard, who played for Colorado during the 2016-2017 season, seemed eager to put the incident behind him, stressing that he is focused on the upcoming NBA season.

White’s presence at the Colorado game came as no surprise to fans familiar with his college basketball career. After transferring from Division II basketball at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, White shined in his single season at the University of Colorado, earning First-Team All-Pac-12 honors in 2017. His successful collegiate run eventually led to his selection in the first round of the 2017 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs, and he’s since become a key player for every team he’s joined, including the Boston Celtics.

Last season, White played an instrumental role in helping the Celtics win their 18th NBA title, contributing an impressive 15.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game. His standout performance was rewarded with a four-year, $125.9 million extension, and he also earned a gold medal with Team USA during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Now, with the new NBA season approaching, White and the Celtics are setting their sights on a 19th title, and bookmakers have them as favorites, with odds of +300.

Despite the recent incident, Derrick White remains focused on the task ahead. He and the Celtics are ready to continue their success, with both the team and fans optimistic about the season’s prospects.
