Rangers at front of queue to sign £35m ace who scored 16 goals last season

Philippe Clement has previously admitted that he wants Rangers to bring in a new striker as a priority next month. And the sight of Kemar Roofe staggering off just 16 minutes into Wednesday’s 2-0 victory against St Johnstone – the seasoned forward joining Danilo in the treatment room – will not have softened that position.

The Glasgow giants had already been linked with Bojan Miovski, but Aberdeen have made it clear that they don’t want to sell. Kevin van Veen, meanwhile, is keen to make a success of his stint at Groningen.

Rangers might not run into quite so many barriers in their pursuit of Fabio Silva, however.

It’s likely that Wolves will permit the former FC Porto starlet to depart. Silva may be keen on a fresh start too, after playing only 17 minutes of Premier League football since mid-September.

Rangers eye Wolves swoop for Fabio Silva

According to O Jogo, Rangers are at the front of the queue for the 21-year-old marksman. Old Firm rivals Celtic are interested too, and both clubs would likely be contingent on Wolves accepting short-term loan bids.

Of course, that cannot be ruled out. An impressive time north of the border at Ibrox or Parkhead might do wonders for Silva’s reputation, giving Wolves a considerably better chance of recouping most of that erroneous £35 million investment.

16 goals in the previous campaign

“I’ve spoken to Fabio about what we need from him,” Wolves boss Gary O’Neil told the Shropshire Star. “A regularity in his work style. He must have a genuine intensity throughout the week and exhibit remarkable consistency in his on-field performances.

“Having more ball security while maintaining my goal threat ability… Playing in the toughest competition in the world, he is a youthful number nine. So it’s normal that I give him these things to help him get better.

“(Silva) has been really willing in the last few weeks. He’s working harder than he was at the start of the season, he’s really trying to force his way in.”

Even with several years of experience playing for the first team, Silva is still young. In the 2023–2024 season, he scored 16 goals while on loan at Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven.
