It’s difficult to say for sure what the Cavaliers and guard Donovan Mitchell have planned, but rumors in the NBA tend to indicate that the All-Star guard will play for a different team in the future. Furthermore, even if Mitchell’s contract expires in July 2025, it’s hard to predict what would happen in a trade.
On the Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast on Monday, however, Windhorst emphasized the possibility of a “bidding war” if Mitchell becomes available through a trade between the Nets and the Knicks. Beyond that, though, Windhorst offered an intriguing observation, as reported by Nets Daily, regarding the Heat’s possible interest in the Southwest Division, along with “at least two other teams”.
The roster of possible teams that could show interest in signing Mitchell appears to be expanding daily. The idea that Mitchell will eventually depart Cleveland, though, appears to gain traction every time the subject is brought up. ESPN source Tim Bontemps reaffirmed on the same podcast that he doesn’t think the guard will sign a new contract with the Cavaliers.
It is easy to imagine the Heat, Knicks, Nets, and other teams showing a strong desire to add a player of Mitchell’s caliber, but only time will tell.
