Watford could face a huge rebuild in the summer months and a dream transfer window could well be in their sights
Watford should just be about fine in the bid to stave off any form of relegation danger whatsoever after a shambolic second half to the season – and soon attentions will turn to preparing themselves for next summer in a bid to go again in the Championship.Just three wins since Christmas has seen the Hornets go from play-off contenders to having genuine worries over being dragged into a relegation battle, though a 1-0 win at Birmingham City at the weekend has massively eased any anxiousness from fans after a poor run of form.
Tom Cleverley has taken the reins until the end of the season, though the search for a new gaffer is underway and Shaun Maloney of Wigan Athletic has been linked.
However, for the Hornets to have a dream transfer window they may have to sell to buy – and here is how we see the perfect window, firstly as potential exits are looked at.
One player who could be sold for a decent fee to bring in some incomings is Louza.
Signed by the Hornets at the start of the 2021-22 season, the French-born Morocco international was a mainstay in their first-team during their relegation from the Premier League, and featured relatively frequently last season as the Hertfordshire-based outfit failed to reach the play-offs for an instant return to the top-flight.
This season though saw him fail to register in Valerien Ismael’s plans – the playmaker began the season firmly in the side, but just a handful of minutes from the turn of November saw Louza register just one start and two further appearances from the bench.
He was sent to Lorient on loan but you do get the feeling that Louza would be one of Watford’s most valuable assets – and with his career at Vicarage Road stalling, he could well bring in a huge fee given that he has four years left on his deal.
Elsewhere, Pollock could be sold due to his general in-and-out nature in the first-team that, and his departure could allow for another incoming.
The Hornets have Ryan Porteous, Francisco Sierralta and Wesley Hoedt at the club so that means he is fourth-choice; a loan spell at Aberdeen did little to change that, and a fresh start could be needed on his behalf for proper first-team minutes whilst a replacement could be brought in to add quality to their ranks.
Fletcher should undoubtedly be on his way out of the club after failing to crack the code since his move in 2021. He’s had two largely uneventful loan spells at Wigan and Sheffield Wednesday since, and with other options available in the summer squad and the market itself, Hornets bosses could look for a quick sale.
With Jamal Lewis only on loan, Watford will be in need of a left-back in the summer – and if they don’t wrap up his signing on a permanent deal, then there could well be a new man to be looked at.
One such player could be Peterborough’s Burrows. The 22-year-old has been superb for Posh this season on the left-flank, and with 22 goal involvements in League One, that is a sensational tally regardless of division.
