Gregory leaves Owls to rejoin Mansfield
League One-bound Mansfield Town have signed Sheffield Wednesday’s Lee Gregory on a one-year deal that sees the striker return to the Stags on a free transfer 13 years after he left Field Mill.
Lee Gregory has returned to his roots, joining Mansfield Town as their first signing since their promotion to League One. The 35-year-old forward began his professional career with Mansfield, featuring in two Conference (now National League) matches for them back in 2010. Over the years, Gregory has built an impressive resume in both the lower leagues and the Championship.
Gregory’s career includes significant stints at clubs such as FC Halifax Town, Millwall, Stoke City, and Derby County. His time at Millwall was particularly notable, where he scored 64 goals in 204 league appearances. He joined Sheffield Wednesday (the Owls) in the summer of 2021, helping them secure promotion from League One with 11 goals. However, he struggled to make an impact last season, netting just once in 15 appearances in the Championship.
Reflecting on his return to Mansfield, Gregory expressed enthusiasm about rejoining a club that he described as being “on the up.” He mentioned the club’s upward trajectory and how the positive environment and location played crucial roles in his decision. Gregory also highlighted the influence of the manager’s reputation for treating players well as a key factor in his return to the club.
As Mansfield Town prepares for their first season back in the third tier after a 21-year absence, Gregory’s experience and goal-scoring ability are expected to be valuable assets. His signing represents an ambitious move for the club as they aim to establish themselves in League One.
