A photographer who has documented Ipswich Town and Colchester United matches for nearly 30 years is retiring, having covered an impressive 1,456 games.

Warren Page, the dedicated photographer, will conclude his career just before Ipswich Town ascends to the Premier League. Despite the exciting timing, Page believes it’s the right moment to step back. He admitted that the demanding schedule, often involving late-night returns from away games, has taken its toll on family life.

Reflecting on his decision, Page confessed that the reality of retiring hit him during Ipswich’s away game against Coventry in April, marking the end of a significant chapter in his life.

Page’s journey began as a press officer for a local team, where he combined photography with match reporting. Over the years, he witnessed significant changes in the industry, particularly with the advent of digital photography. He recalled the early days of rushing to process film in a darkroom, contrasting it with today’s instant digital capabilities.

Despite the challenges, Page’s career was filled with memorable moments, from capturing iconic goals to witnessing the rise of talented players like Shefki Kuqi and Lomana LuaLua. He also recalled photographing key moments involving former Ipswich Town chairman Marcus Evans and player David Norris’s infamous handcuff celebration.

For aspiring sports photographers, Page emphasized the importance of anticipation, game knowledge, and split-second timing to capture the perfect shot, particularly during crucial moments like goals. He expressed his disdain for missing goals and emphasized the pressure he feels to ensure he captures every significant moment.
