Wayne Rooney is apparently sought as a lead analyst for Sky Sports and TNT Sports ahead of next season’s Premier League campaign, but the former Birmingham City manager is still wanting to return to the dugout.

Rooney was fired by Blues on New Year’s Day after only winning two of his 15 games in command since taking over from John Eustace in October. The club was then in the play-off positions. His catastrophic stint was cut short before he was given the opportunity to fix the flaws in the transfer window, following a humiliating defeat at Leeds United.

Rooney has remained in the public eye, appearing as a commentator for Sky, TNT, and the BBC. He was also scheduled to appear on Match of the Day before suffering a back ailment while on holiday with his family. Rooney has joined The Overlap podcast, alongside former teammates Gary Neville and Roy Keane.

The Premier League rights holders, along with Amazon Prime, are interested in hiring him on a permanent basis for the 2024-25 season, indicating his lasting impact.

Going into punditry in a more concrete manner than before would entail following his former teammates, such as Neville, Keane, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand, and Owen Hargreaves, in front of the camera to provide insight on matches. However, Rooney, who would require a club to take a risk on him following his disastrous spell with the Blues, is still eager to return to management.

Prior to joining Blues, Rooney was a coach at DC United in the MLS, as well as a player and head coach at Derby County in the Championship in 2021-22.
