Derby County have entered the competition to sign Viktor Johansson from Rotherham United, alongside Leeds United, as reported. Following their return to the Championship after a two-year spell in League One, Derby is gearing up to reinforce their squad for the upcoming challenging season.
Over the past six years, manager Warne has led his teams to promotion four times from the third division – thrice with Rotherham and now once with Derby. His track record establishes him as a notable promotion specialist in the English Football League.
Yet, ensuring Derby County’s Championship status next season poses another formidable challenge. Nonetheless, Warne’s extensive experience in managing the league equips him to identify the necessary additions to navigate through a demanding division.
One potential addition linked to a reunion with Warne is Johansson, who was previously signed by him during his tenure at Rotherham, where he impressed and earned the Young Player of the Season award. With Rotherham’s relegation to League One, speculation about Johansson’s future has escalated, with Derby reportedly joining Stoke City and Sheffield United in pursuing the 25-year-old.
Reports suggest Leeds United is also considering a bid for Johansson during the summer transfer window. Johansson is said to have a release clause with Rotherham, with varying reports citing figures around £1 million or £750,000. If Warne aims to secure a new goalkeeper for Derby County, activating Johansson’s buy-out clause could be a prudent move.
Notably, Derby acquired Josh Vickers from Rotherham last summer, establishing a prior connection for Johansson at Pride Park. However, Joe Wildsmith, another goalkeeper at Derby, might feel sidelined if Johansson were to assume the starting role next season.
