Payne has previously stated that he keeps his body prepared for action by hopping around the bench to honour his teammates. The first two games of the series were close games that ended with Sixers losses, so there wasn’t much to celebrate, but Payne stayed ready and took advantage of his chance.

Cam Payne provides spark off the bench in 76ers’ Game 3 win vs. Knicks

Philadelphia 76ers guard Cameron Payne (22) reacts to his three pointer against the New York Knicks during the second quarter of game three of the first round for the 2024 NBA playoffs at Wells Fargo Center.

After scoring 11 points, three assists, and two blocks on 4–7 shooting, Cam Payne became the first player from the 76ers to score in double figures in this series coming off the bench. Based on his observations of how the games went and where he could be of assistance to the Sixers, as well as his conversations with the coaching staff, he had a feeling he would get an opportunity to play.

“He was fantastic.Regarding Payne’s performance, Nick Nurse remarked, “He certainly did a good job.”

Trainer Robbie Haught, who travelled to work out with Payne on the Sixers’ days off, was commended by Payne. Throughout the game, he made mental notes about how Philly covers its opponents, small errors that need to be corrected, and the way the referees call the play.

In the first two games of the series, Philly’s bench had trouble keeping up with New York’s, a problem that highlights the generally poor support Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid have received this series. After playing only a few minutes in Game 1, Payne believed he would have a chance to contribute in Game 2.

Nurse mentioned Payne’s wish to play some meaningful minutes before Game 2, even going so far as to say the veteran guard will “for sure” get an opportunity to play. Payne never played, even though Maxey was suffering from a terrible illness in that game.

That is sometimes the way things work out.Payne stated, “You might get in, you might not. But you must maintain the same frame of mind.Since this is a four-game series, you have to maintain the same frame of mind because you never know when an opportunity will present itself.I doubt that I would have done what I did tonight if I had been depressed and insane. And that’s the way the NBA operates.

According to Payne, staying “locked in” entails making an effort in hopes of receiving a reward that isn’t always certain, much less certain. Nurse appears to be at ease managing an eight-player rotation at the moment. Nico Batum and Paul Reed have already secured their spots in the starting five, leaving just one spot available for the remaining eight players.
