‘I could have 100,000 shouting my name and I’ll just go out and enjoy my football’

The chorus echoed regularly in the Cumbrian breeze: “He’s one of ours, Bobby Pointon, he’s one of ours.” This has evolved into a fan anthem whenever the number 23 is in the City lineup; the Kop season-ticket holder scoring exceptional goals and living the dream for the many who passionately support the team.

Pointon heightened this sentiment with a remarkable goal that opened the scoring in the recent victory at Barrow during the midweek game. He executed a move honed on the training ground the day before, anticipating the defensive lapse as the home team only partially dealt with the corner kick. With a touch to control and then a powerful left-footed strike, “one of ours” scored another goal for the club that feels like his own.

Twenty-four hours later, Pointon stood on stage at the Cedar Court Hotel to receive the award for best goal at City’s awards ceremony – his outstanding goal against Tranmere on Good Friday winning by a significant margin.

The spotlight shines increasingly bright on this young talent from Low Moor. In a club where expectations are perpetually high, the demands and hopes for the locally grown success story seem exceptionally elevated.

However, Pointon remains grounded. He refuses to let the fervor of Valley Parade affect him. “I never allow the pressure to get to me,” said the 20-year-old. “I focus on my game, enjoy playing football, and ignore external pressures. I believe I’ve had a good season, and the fans appreciate that. Staying humble is crucial.”

Pointon has played in every game during the ongoing unbeaten streak, starting with his impactful performance against Harrogate. His start against Tranmere on Good Friday marked his first since mid-January, reflecting the growing anticipation among fans for his return to the starting lineup.

Manager Graham Alexander commented on Pointon’s rise: “Bobby’s emergence has been a significant success story. His energy, enthusiasm, and technical ability were always there, but as a young player, he lacked experience. He’s adapted well to playing in a slightly different position and provides the energy and attacking threat we need.”

Pointon revealed that there were intense discussions in the dressing room after the low point against Harrogate, which fueled improvement. “The atmosphere was tense, but such moments can lead to player growth. When I returned, I aimed to inject energy into the team, which was beneficial during that time.”

City’s fortunes have drastically improved, with Pointon sensing a change in ambition after key wins. “We realized our potential after the comeback win at Salford. Now, we’re in contention for the playoffs, which seemed unlikely earlier in the season.”

The team’s recent resilience, characterized by comebacks and late winners, demonstrates their newfound belief and determination. Pointon emphasized the importance of focusing solely on their performance and securing victories, letting other results take care of themselves.

Regardless of today’s outcome, Pointon is ready for heightened expectations next season. “The expectations may increase, but it won’t affect me. I’ll continue to enjoy playing football, regardless of external pressures.”
