HIGHLIGHTS

  •  Leyton Orient should prioritize keeping Idris El Mizouni, whose impact has been crucial in their recent success.
  •  Retaining Shaq Forde would also benefit the team, given his impressive goal-scoring record in League One.
  •  Orient must act swiftly to secure these talented players amidst uncertainty surrounding their future with current clubs.

Idris El Mizouni (Ipswich Town), Shaq Forde (Watford), Sol Brynn (Middlesbrough), Khayon Edwards (Arsenal), and Dan Adu-Adjei (Bournemouth) are the five players that Leyton Orient has had on loan since the January transfer window.

Adu-Adjei and Edwards have both failed to make much of an initial impression, most likely as a result of insufficient senior-level experience.

Although Sol Brynn has performed admirably in the difficult role of Lawrence Vigoroux’s replacement, it is unlikely that the O’s will want him back for the upcoming season.

However, discussions regarding El Mizouni and Forde’s potential re-signing this summer will undoubtedly take place within the Orient hierarchy.

El Mizouni moved to Ipswich from France in 2017 and trained in the team’s academy for two years before making his professional debut on March 12, 2019, against Bristol City.

After making a few appearances for the Tractor Boys in the Championship and League One, he largely spent the next two seasons on loan at Cambridge and Grimsby.

After that, he rejoined Ipswich for the ensuing season, but he only made 12 appearances overall.

Indeed, he didn’t begin to reach his full potential until the 2022–2023 season while on loan at Orient.

In the 1970s, Leyton Orient produced a player of the highest calibre.

El Mizouni’s contract will expire this summer, though, if Premier League contenders Ipswich decide against asking for an extension.

Given how long he’s been away from Portman Road, that doesn’t seem likely, but he should still have a lot of options. Orient is one of them, along with Bolton Wanderers, Barnsley, Oxford United, and Wycombe Wanderers, all of whom were linked in January.

Though rival teams may be able to offer more lucrative contracts, Wellens will have a difficult time persuading the 23-year-old to sign a contract.

Forde joined Watford’s academy in 2012 and made his first team debut a decade later, in a 4-1 FA Cup third round defeat to Leicester.

In the same year, he scored twice in three games on loan at non-league side Kings Langley.

He then joined National League club York City for the 2022-23 season, netting nine times in 20 appearances – proving that he was ready to take the leap to an EFL team.

Goals Games
Ruel Sotiriou 11 42
Shaq Forde 9 39
Ollie O’Neill 5 17
Dan Agyei 4 16
George Moncur 4 35

Wellens’ Orient offered Forde that opportunity, and it is fair to say that he has made the most of it.

The forward has scored nine goals for the O’s in League One, making him their second-highest goalscorer behind Ruel Sotiriou (11).

Assuming he remains under contract at Watford, which has not been made public, he could be a part of newly-appointed manager Tom Cleverley’s plans.

However, should he become available for loan again, or indeed as a free agent, Orient would be foolish not to make a move for the promising youngster.

The futures of both El Mizouni at Ipswich and Forde at Watford look uncertain and the O’s should be looking to capitalise.
