Hull City head coach Liam Rosenior believes Coventry City’s second-half heroics against Manchester United demonstrated that with belief, anything is possible.

Despite losing on penalties in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, the Sky Blues’ fightback from 3-0 down to take the game to extra-time and almost winning before VAR ruled out a late winner demonstrates what is possible and will be used as motivation.

This evening, City’s head coach travels to Coventry with the goal of clinching a play-off spot against Mark Robins’ team, who are also in the same situation.

City are six points behind Norwich and West Brom, with the Baggies and Canaries having only two games remaining, so Rosenior knows his players must take advantage of their game in hand to close the gap before the penultimate weekend. Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Watford left City feeling flat, especially after West Brom lost and Norwich were held at home by Bristol City, but Rosenior’s men have another opportunity, which they must seize.

“Believe and just win the next game,” he told supporters on the eve of the trip to the CBS Arena. “Let’s look back on a season when it’s actually over; right now, it’s not over. Coventry recovered from a three-nil deficit in an FA Cup semi-final with only 25 minutes remaining. That is why we love football. We have no idea what is around the corner.”

For much of the season, Norwich appeared to be the team to catch, but a poor run of form from West Brom has seen them draw level on points with the Canaries, with Rosenior’s players believing the Baggies, who face a difficult trip to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, can be caught after losing their last two games.

“I got corrected today in a team meeting because I told them ‘look, if we’d have won and Norwich had won, it’d be the same situation – nothing’s changed,'” he went on to say. “One of the players, I won’t name them, told me, ‘Well, it’s not strictly true because we’re a point closer to West Brom.'” That is the type of belief I value in this group. They won’t give up until it’s truly over, and if we keep that mindset, I believe we can accomplish something special.

“What’s the point in showing up if you don’t believe? What’s the point of doing what we love if we don’t have high goals or expectations? We are working extremely hard because we believe we can accomplish great things.
