Another outstanding performance by Milan Van Ewijk against Manchester United typified the Dutchman’s impressive debut season in English football.

Mark Robins, who beat Leeds to sign the full-back from SC Heerenveen, will be pleased with the 23-year-old’s performance this season despite his inconsistent team.

Balancing right-midfield and right-back has been a challenge for Van Ewijk, but the Netherlands under-21 international has done an excellent job and appears to be in the market for another big move soon.

Van Ewijk has been a reliable player for Robins this season. Having missed only three games this season, he has been a stalwart in the Sky Blues side. After two brilliant seasons at Heerenveen, €4 million looks like a steal every day.

Despite Coventry’s poor start, he was a standout player, scoring his first goal against Watford with a stunning free-kick from 30 yards. A string of decent performances followed, but after November, he really began to show his true colours, with numerous goal contributions and a lovely partnership developing with Japanese winger Tatsuhiro Sakamoto.

After Sakamoto’s injury in late February, Coventry’s manager decided to shift Van Ewijk into a more advanced role. The Dutch youth international has adjusted well and performed admirably in the recent FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United, where he was up against England international Marcus Rashford.

In a post-match interview with Ziggo Sport, Van Ewijk stated that he managed Rashford effectively.

“But, of course, there are moments when he demonstrates his abilities. Luckily, I had a good match. “I showed who I am today so I can go home with my head held high,” he stated.

Coventry City could have been holding onto a play off spot rather than chasing one had it not have been for Sakamoto’s injury.

Statistically, Van Ewijk has been superb

Watching him live, it’s clear that the 23-year-old is an extremely talented footballer, and the statistics back this up. According to FBref, he ranks in the top 15% of all fullbacks in terms of goals and assists, progressive carries, and progressive passes received.

He is not only strong offensively, but he can also play defensively. Ranks in the top 30th percentile for all tackling and interception statistics. This was especially evident against the Red Devils, where he made two successful tackles and created three opportunities for his team from right wing-back.

Coventry’s near-perfect FA Cup comeback is a memorable experience.

Many City players saw it as an opportunity to prove themselves on the biggest stage, and Van Ewijk was among those who took advantage of it. His outstanding performance against Rashford will have caught the attention of many scouts from top-tier clubs, and summer interest in the youngster is entirely possible.

At only 23 years old, he represents a player with room for growth, and with a contract until 2026, he could command a high salary. Leeds and Sporting Lisbon are both interested in the Sky Blues full-back, so it’s possible that one of them will make a tempting offer to sign him.

Premier League interest is also possible, and his versatility may appeal to a team that plays with three defenders. Wolves and Crystal Palace are two clubs that could be a good fit for Van Ewijk and would most likely be willing to pay a high price for him.
