Barry Bannan delivers relegation verdict as Sheff Wed send Birmingham City into drop zone

Sheffield Wednesday’s captain Barry Bannan expressed that the team has received a significant boost in confidence as they battle to avoid relegation from the Championship. Bannan played a crucial role in their 3-1 victory against Blackburn Rovers, a result that has lifted Wednesday out of the relegation zone for the first time since August. This outcome also places Birmingham City in the relegation zone with only two games remaining.

Bannan, who previously played for Aston Villa and openly enjoys teasing fans with sympathies for Birmingham City, mentioned that Wednesday will enter their upcoming matches against West Brom and Sunderland with increased belief.

He stated to Sky Sports, “This result adds to our confidence. However, we still have two more crucial games ahead that we need to win. Today’s victory is a significant step towards our goal, but we remain focused on the tasks ahead. We will take a break tomorrow, regroup during the week, and prepare for the challenges awaiting us next week.”

John Eustace, the former Birmingham City manager who began the season at St Andrew’s and had his team in playoff contention before his dismissal, is now managing Blackburn. Their position near the relegation zone became more precarious after conceding three poor goals against Wednesday.

Eustace acknowledged the setback, stating, “It’s a setback for us. It’s crucial that we bounce back quickly and maintain our focus. We need to stay united and not dwell too much on today’s result. Our destiny is still in our hands, and we have an opportunity next Saturday to rectify things.”

He emphasized the importance of maintaining the team’s character and unity, highlighting the need to improve defensively and seize the upcoming opportunity to set things right.
