Iowa Football: Iowa wide receiver enters transfer portal

News: On Tuesday, Iowa wide receiver Jacob Bostick declared his plan to use the transfer portal.

Bostick played 58 snaps and made five appearances for Iowa in 2023. Bostick was the only wide receiver in Iowa’s 2022 recruiting class to receive a scholarship.

Bostick, who had injury problems during his first two years on campus, was expected to be among Iowa’s best wide receivers this fall. Bostick, though, desired to move on and look for a new opportunity elsewhere.

Kelton Copeland, a former wide receivers coach at Iowa, was spearheading the recruiting of Bostick in the 2022 class.

With spring ball almost over, Iowa now has 89 scholarships after Bostick’s departure. By the time fall camp begins, the Hawkeyes must have reduced their scholarship count to 85.

Bostick’s departure leaves Kaleb Brown, Seth Anderson, Kaden Wetjen, Jarriett Buie, Dayton Howard, and others as Iowa’s primary wide receiver group.

What is the portal for transfers? Starting on Tuesday, April 16, and lasting for two weeks until Tuesday, April 30, is when the spring transfer portal will open.

The NCAA originally scheduled the spring transfer window to begin on May 1. However, the NCAA changed it later to begin in April. Teams will be able to host recruits on visits throughout the spring window as it’s a contact period.

In that sense, the winter window regulations were much more stringent. Schools are not permitted to make in-person recruiting contacts because fifteen of the thirty days the portal was open during the winter were dead. Since a court order in December allowed multi-time transfers to leave their schools without serving a year-in-residence penalty, all players are now eligible to transfer, unlike when the last portal window opened. Underclassmen were previously only permitted to transfer once without incurring any fees. Now, at least through the 2023-24 academic calendar year, players are allowed to transfer in unlimited fashion and still retain their eligibility for the 2024 season.
