Local historian turned author Scott Duffin says the response to Elephants of Coventry has been ‘amazing’
The book began to take shape when Scott, an antiques collector by trade, noticed images of elephants on several buildings and monuments in Coventry on the Visit Historic Coventry Facebook page, which he currently manages. “No one seemed to have a definite answer to how many there were and where they all were,” says Scott.
“So around two years ago, I set out on a quest to locate them on my own. In the end, I had to search every street in Coventry for them.”
It is believed that Bonds Hospital on Hill Street is home to the oldest elephant. “In 1505 money was given to build that one by Thomas Bonds, not long after the archway was put up,” says Scott. “I believe that’s the oldest representation we have of one in the city.”
Though Scott’s first book was just published, he already has ideas for five more, according to his ambitious nature. Not bad for a man without any formal education.
Scott attended a variety of elementary schools before permanently leaving Lyng Hall School and the mainstream curriculum after only reaching year 8. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of his debut book will be given to the Midland Langar Seva Society and Pass The Smile For Ben, two neighborhood nonprofits.
