Remarkably shocking information regarding West Ham’s financial situation has been revealed by renowned football finance expert Kieran Maguire.
There could be a lot of activity during the summer transfer window for West Ham.
Six first team players are out of contract, and expensive quality additions are required at a number of positions.
This summer, the Premier League is anticipated to introduce new PSR regulations.
The squad cost-to-revenue ratio specified in UEFA’s Financial Sustainability Regulations (FSR) will be in line with the new system.
Amidst PSR uncertainty, the Hammers had a quiet January. Apart from Kalvin Phillip’s loan fee, West Ham did not spend any money in January.
This was true even after Said Benrahma, Conor Coventry, Thilo Kehrer, and Pablo Fornals were let go.
The points that West Ham’s Premier League rivals are receiving for breaking sustainability and profitability regulations have clouded the picture of what the owners will and won’t have to spend this summer.
Therefore, the numbers released by a leading authority on football finance may surprise supporters greatly.
Regarding West Ham’s financial situation, Kieran Maguire has revealed something startling.
West Ham’s loser
The Price of Football books author and co-host of the eponymous podcast claims that West Ham has the lowest operating loss of any club in the 2023 accounts, with the exception of Brentford, the only team to turn a profit.
Maguire examined the daily deficits for Prem clubs in the 2023 accounts before player sales and interest expenses.
It demonstrates Brentford’s £4 million operating profit.
However, West Ham had the lowest operating loss of any club at £12 million.
Leicester (-£152m) topped the rankings, with Brighton (-£16m) being the next lowest.
According to the most recent accounts, West Ham’s competitors with the next-highest losses were Aston Villa (-£139m) and Everton (-£115m).
In the 2023 accounts, West Ham was one of just four clubs with an operating loss of less than £30 million.
What Maguire said regarding West Ham’s capacity to spend during the summer
According to Maguire, “PL clubs’ day-to-day losses before player sales and interest costs exceed £1 billion.”
“We are currently awaiting final figures for Leeds, Chelsea, Palace, and Fulham; however, we suspect their figures may exceed the 2022 figures that are currently displayed in the chart (pertaining to those clubs).”
Maguire recently examined West Ham’s financial situation in an exclusive interview with Hammers News in advance of the summer.
Furthermore, he stated that although West Ham “will not be in a fantastic position” in light of the new regulations, the team will probably have a little more wiggle room to spend, particularly now that they are enjoying the advantages of playing in Europe and the Declan Rice sale.
Last week, Hammers News was informed by a top source inside West Ham about the possible summer budget for the team.
The manager’s finances would also improve with the anticipated £85 million sale of Lucas Paqueta to Manchester City.
