For Coventry City fans, it’s safe to say that the past two weeks have been fantastic. After a thrilling away victory over Premier League team Wolves, the Sky Blues advanced to the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1987. Additionally, the team has improved their play-off chances thanks to a run of play that has seen them lose just twice since February 3.
The Coventry supporters can expect an interesting conclusion to the season as the team sits seventh in the league, four points outside the play-offs and with a game remaining.
Coventry’s FA Cup quarterfinal victory guaranteed them a spot at Wembley next month.
The Sky Blues, who were only in League Two in 2018, have made a strong comeback under Mark Robins and are now a top-half Championship team with their sights set on the top flight.
In the Championship Coventry, Coventry City’s team value is ranked eleventh. The fact that the three Premier League demoted clubs include the top three clubs in terms of squad market values is not shocking at all.
With a squad market worth of €204 million, Leeds United is in second place, and Southampton is third with a squad market value of €189 million.
Hull City is the next best team, with a €105 million market value. This shows the difference in squad depth and financial capacity between the three Premier League teams that were relegated and the rest of the division. This is a full €85 million less than Southampton.
With a squad market value of €58.6 million and €53.60 million, respectively, Coventry is roughly in the top half of Championship teams. They are positioned between Stoke City and West Brom.
It should come as no surprise that Rotherham United, with a squad worth of just €14.75 million, has the lowest value in the league. Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle, two teams that earned promotion the previous season, are next, with values of €20.18 million and €30.40 million, respectively.
Under Mark Robins, Coventry City is striking above their weight.
Coventry is definitely punching above their weight with their league position and run to the FA Cup semi-final, considering their squad is ranked 11th in the Championship.
The team is seeking to improve this season and possibly make a historic FA Cup and promotion double. Last season, they made it to the play-off final but lost on penalties.
The team has changed under Robins’ leadership since he took over in 2017, and thanks to the former Manchester United striker’s man management, it’s safe to say they’re better than the sum of their parts.
Though Coventry is the only team in the division currently fighting on two fronts, and that’s with a squad that contains a fraction of that €200m market value, Robins’ team is punching above their weight. Nothing has been won yet, but the team is performing well under Robins.
