Reading CEO drops update on the situation over the training ground

Former Reading CEO, and current Property Projects Manager, Nigel Howe, believes Wycombe Wanderers’ pursuit of Bearwood training ground ‘is now over.’

Howe, the man tasked with finding the club with a new buyer, was Chief Executive during the club’s rise from the third tier to the Premier League in the 1990s and 2000s.

News broke last week that the Chairboys were keen on buying Bearwood, entering a period of exclusivity and offering to financially support the club with imminent payments due to avoid points deductions.

However, the club announced their intention to put any plans ‘on hold’ due to a Wokingham Borough Council planning issue whereby only Reading can use the land.

Speaking on BBC Berkshire in the aftermath, Howe commented: “At three o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, clearly, the situation over the training ground is now over. You can say that is probably not going to go forward. It then allows us to revert back to where we were prior to that, to get on with the original group of buyers.

“It was a bit unfortunate last week that we had the slight interruption. I slightly understand that although I wasn’t around at the time, the owner received a very substantial offer, about the same size as he was being offered for the whole club. Now we’ve cleared up that it’s not straightforward to sell the training ground, we can move on with the other offers we’ve got.”

The club are hopeful of being in a position to offer exclusivity ahead of this month’s tax payment, due this week, and payroll which comes next week.
