Russell Wilson was apparently passed over by the New York Giants for one particular reason.

The New York Giants were reportedly finalists in the NFL free agency pursuit of quarterback Russell Wilson. Despite their efforts, Wilson ultimately chose to sign a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers instead of the Giants, who later landed Drew Lock. The reason for the Giants missing out on Wilson became apparent through a recent report.

Despite making Daniel Jones one of the highest-paid NFL players just a year ago, the Giants are already exploring options to move on from him. Jones is currently recovering from an ACL tear, and the Giants have been actively seeking upgrades and competition for the quarterback position in the 2024 season.

During his free agency, Wilson met with the Giants and then visited the Pittsburgh Steelers. Although the meeting with the Giants went well, Wilson ultimately chose the Steelers because they offered him the starting quarterback job for the upcoming season. In contrast, the Giants did not promise playing time or offer him the starting role.

Wilson’s decision sheds light on the Giants’ quarterback situation and their willingness to explore alternatives despite signing Lock. Additionally, the Giants might still consider drafting a quarterback in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. However, with the Minnesota Vikings acquiring another first-round pick, it could be more challenging and costly for the Giants to move up in the draft to select players like Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy.
