Marc Roberts, a defender for Birmingham City, will need to make a significant choice in the summer.

Roberts has been a key member of the Blues for the past seven years after joining from Barnsley in July 2017.

Marc Roberts stats for Birmingham City (up to the end of the 2022/23 season)
Season Appearances Goals Assists
2017-18 35 1 1
2018-19 9 0 0
2019-20 35 1 1
2020-21 37 4 2
2021-22 39 2 2
2022-23 26 0 1

Roberts has only made 13 appearances in all competitions this season, which has limited his playing time even though injuries have recently given him extra opportunities.
Given his lack of playing time this season, Roberts’ future at St Andrew’s appears questionable since his contract is slated to expire at the end of the current campaign.
Birmingham’s season has been difficult; with the contentious decision to start Wayne Rooney in lieu of John Eustace in October, the team fell out of the play-off spots and into the relegation zone.
After only two wins in his fifteen games as manager, Rooney was fired in January. Tony Mowbray, his replacement, had an immediate positive effect. However, he has since resigned due to health issues, leaving assistant manager Mark Venus to take over in his place.
Commentator for Birmingham City on Marc Roberts’ future
Although Roberts has played admirably when called upon this season, FLW’s Birmingham City fan commentator Mike Gibbs believes the team shouldn’t extend an offer to the 33-year-old.
“I think with Marc Roberts, it’s a fairly simple one to release him,” Mike stated.
“I think it doesn’t change my overall view that he will be moving on after the season, even though he has had some really good games this year,” the author said.
“I don’t think Mowbray and the owners want this kind of defender; he’s into his 30s and has had a turbulent time at Birmingham.”
You couldn’t play a high line with him because he would get caught in behind. By that, I mean that he isn’t very good with the ball, isn’t a terrific passer of the ball, and doesn’t really have the pace and acceleration to play on the front foot.
“I believe that I would unquestionably see his freedom.
“I was shocked to learn that his contract was extended a few weeks ago because I assume he was also paid very well when he signed, so I think this is a no-brainer move in a different direction.”
