Will Howard, a transfer quarterback, joined Ohio State early in the spring with the expectation of being the team’s starting signal-caller and potential national title contender. Outstanding quarterback play is practically a requirement for College Football Playoff contention and success in the biggest games of the sport, thus that role has expectations and pressures of its own. Prior to spring practices, however, Howard stated that he and the Buckeyes are embracing the highest of ambitions for the 2024 campaign and that they “didn’t come here to be nervous or to be timid.”
Since Ohio State’s offensive coordinator Chip Kelly arrived, Howard has been forced to master a new scheme. That scheme might facilitate the quarterback’s transfer to a different team and help the Buckeyes reach their full potential.
In a pre-spring practice media event, Howard stated, “We know how much is on the line, and we know how much we’ve already kind of given to this season and how much we’ve invested in this team.” We are aware that winning is ultimately our primary objective, and we want to win them all. That is the essential point.
ABOUT ACCEPTING HIGH STANDARDS AT OHIO STATE:
“We welcome it each day. We are aware of the stakes, as well as the amount of time and money we have already kind of thrown into this season and this club. We have, in my opinion, a really, really good winner. It’s wonderful to see how committed the guys are, how much leadership we have on the team, and how many guys have chosen to return or attend this program. What’s at stake is known to us. We are constantly striving to reach that 1%. We understand that ultimately, winning is what we really want to do. That is the essential point.
ABOUT HIS NERVES ENTRY-LEVEL PRACTICES:
“I have another year left. I didn’t come here to feel shy, uneasy, or anything of the sort. I’m prepared to leave. It may not all be flawless, that much is true. I may make a few mistakes, but that’s how I’ll grow as a person and how our team will grow together. For me, nothing is too large. For this group, nothing is too large. Not spring ball, for sure. Overall, there will be a lot to learn, but I’m looking forward to it. I wish to accept that. That is what makes this so awesome.
ABOUT ACQUIRING THE OFFENSIVE SYSTEM OF THE BUCKEYES:
I’m a really experiential learner. You can spend as much time as you like reading through the playbook and the installs, but I believe that the best way to learn is to actually do it. At least, that’s how I learn best. Since that’s really how I learn a little bit better, we’ve been attempting to mimic some things using simply walkthrough-type scenarios, and I’ve been trying to visualize as much as I can and get up on that board and write things out.
“It’s going to be a significant learning curve for me in the spring because I’ve played football at a high level, but this spring will be important for me to just get more familiar with the system. I think it will be important for me to feel at ease with what we call things, how we read things, and how Coach Kelly and Coach Day teach different things. I am fairly knowledgeable about it. Of course, I haven’t yet repped it.
I believe I know a good amount about it. I’m at ease with what I know about it. It simply involves taking action and going out there.
