West Bromwich Albion have removed the iconic throstle bird from their badge for the entirety of the 3rd of March as they join in in raising awareness of the nature campaign #WorldWithoutNature. The campaign is created by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) on what is the fourth annual World Wildlife Day.

Albion, as they have done in years previously, will remove the bird – a song thrush – which sits in a hawthorn tree, from their digital channels for the day to support the cause. Wolverhampton Wanderers have done similar in showing their support, while a host of other clubs on social media – including Swansea City and Millwall – have also removed animals from their crests.

The campaign is aimed at highlighting the crisis that nature in the UK and around the world is suffering. The WWF have produced an online petition and they’re encouraging members of the public to sign it and help to apply pressure on the Government to take action.

“At that time, the team would get changed in the Plough and Harrow pub which lay adjacent to Stoney Lane, Albion’s former home. The landlady kept a very chirpy throstle which the players would look at as they walked out to the pitch. If the bird made plenty of noise, the players would see that as an omen for success.”

Albion have a throstle in the Woodman Corner of The Hawthorns.
